DYMO® Label Writer Installation and Setup

Introduction

eVetPractice has the ability to print labels directly to DYMO® label writers. These can be Rx labels, cage card labels, patient labels, client labels, and inventory labels. This article explains the installation process of DYMO® software and the configuration setup needed for eVetPractice.

DYMO currently only supports printing from Windows OS and Mac OS.  You will need a Windows or Mac computer to print labels from eVetPractice.  Other OS's such as Android, iOS, and ChromeOS are not supported by direct DYMO integration.

Printer Setup

Based on the setup of the office, you may have a DYMO® Print Server, network printers, or shared printers. It is the client’s responsibility to manage and maintain their printer setup, but here are a few guidelines to review when sharing printers.

Sharing the Printer (Windows OS)

If you have one DYMO® label writer and you want to make it available for other computers in your network, you can share the printer so that it can be detected by other computers not connected directly to the printer. You can share the printer during installation or by going into the printer properties, as explained below.

  1. Navigate to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  2. Right click on the DYMO printer and select Printer Properties
  3. Click on Sharing tab.
  4. Click box for “Share this printer”. Enter Share name. Click box for “Render print jobs on client computers”
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Adding a Network/Shared Printer

If your computer/device is on the same network as the shared printer, you should be able to install it on your local PC. The easiest way is to search for it.

  1. Navigate to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  2. Click on Add a printer. A search will begin and populate any local or shared printers it can find.
  3. If the shared DYMO printer appears, select it and click Next.
  4. A window should appear indicating that the printer has been installed successfully. Click Next and Finish.

If the printer was not detected, you can try to enter it in manually by performing the following steps:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  2. Click on Add a printer. Click on “The printer that I want isn’t listed”
  3. Click button for “Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings”. Click Next.
  4. Click button for “Create a new port” and select Local Port from the drop down. Click Next.
  5. Enter path for the port name. ex. \\servername\Printershare
  6. Select DYMO as Manufacturer. Select desired label writer version from the list. Click Next.
  7. Click Next and use driver that is currently installed.
  8. Enter Printer name (or leave default). Click Next.
  9. Click on “Do not share this printer” and click Next. Click Finish when done.

Troubleshooting

For issues with the DYMO label writer, it is recommended to refer to DYMO’s website for support. Issues such as double feeding, quality, and connection issues are usually outside of eVetPractice. Here are a few tips on some issues that are commonly reported:

Things to check:

  1. Make sure that the DYMO web service is running.
    1. In the lower right system tray (Windows PC), click on the DYMO Web Service icon and select 'Diagnose...'
    2. If you get a message indicating that the DYMO Label Web service is running on port xxxx, click on Yes to open a new page to check the certificate.
    3. If you do not get that message, then the DYMO Label Web service is not running as desired. Things to try:
      1. Reboot computer.
      2. Uninstall DYMO software, reboot, and reinstall DYMO software,
      3. Ultimately, may need to contact DYMO support for assistance getting their DYMO Label Web service to work.

**If the DYMO Label Web service is not running and functioning as desired, you will not be able to print to the DYMO LabelWriter from a web browser, which is how you print using eVetPractice. It is recommended to work with DYMO support or your internal IT Staff for assistance getting the DYMO web service to run properly.

Issue: When you print using Chrome, you receive the following message:

Is Browser Supported: true
Is Framework Installed: false
Error Details: DYMO Label Framework Plugin is not installed

Possible cause: DYMO web service is being blocked by the browser.

Resolution: Refer to this article for a possible resolution while DYMO continues to work on the issue in Chrome.
https://evetpractice.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000088553-Chrome-58-and-Dymo-printing-errors

Issue: Label writer is double feeding labels

Possible cause: Sensors are dirty on the label writer

Resolution: Feed the supplied cleaning card through the LabelWriter a couple of times and try again.

Issue: When printing Rx Labels only customer gets this error:  ERROR: Failed to execute webservice command 400.

Other labels print from Evetpractice without a problem

Possible cause: Dymo Printer settings in Evetpractice has 0 instead of 1 in the option "Number of Rx label copies"

Resolution: Go to Settings Gear icon > General and open the Dymo Printer Settings section and change the option if needed

Issue: Labels aren't formatted correctly in certain portions

Possible Cause: Dymo Connect 1.2 or higher is installed instead of the Dymo Label Software.  It interprets the labels differently than the Dymo Label Software.

Resolution: Uninstall Dymo Connect, reinstall the Dymo Label Software from the links provided above, and reboot the computer that is impacted.

Issue: Framework not installed error comes up after installing Chrome 84 or higher, Firefox 78 or higher, or Edge 84 (Chromium)

Possible Cause: The security certificate for the Dymo webservice does not support TLS 1.2 or higher.  This may not impact every computer at your practice.

Resolution: Varies by browser.

Chrome - Enter chrome:///flags into the address bar and set the option "Enforce deprecation of legacy TLS versions" to Disabled

Edge - Enter edge:///flags into the address bar and set the option "Enforce deprecation of legacy TLS versions" to Disabled

Firefox - Enter about:config into the address bar and set the option "security.tls.version.min" to 0
